These are sample cups which show the process by which makie lacquer-ware is produced. The name Icchô is recorded in this museum's register. These cups may have been made by Kawanobe Icchô (1830-1910), who was appointed an imperial craftsman in 1896 (Meiji 29). In the Meiji period, art schools were founded, the association of lacquer-ware makers was started, and this museum was opened with the name Kyoto Imperial Museum. In this historical process in which new social systems were established and a new social awareness was budding in Japan, lacquer-work and makie became "art" while lacquer-ware makers and makie makers became "artists." Works like these came into existence in this environment.
