In ancient China, dragons were seen as high-ranking, powerful creatures that controlled the heavens and the rain and represented the emperor. Their image in Japan was similar. This dragon, however, exudes more charm than fearsomeness. The artist is one from a long line of Kyoto lacquerers, all with the same name.
