At the Kumano Hayatama Shrine in the Kishû region are preserved twelve toiletry cases, which were dedicated in 1390 (Meitoku 1) by the third Muromachi shogun, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu (1358-1408). Since this toiletry case (J., tebako) is very similar in form and design to those of the Kumano Hayatama Shrine, it is assumed that they were produced under similar circumstances. For this reason, this is an extremely valuable object.
