The white slip applied by brush to the surface of this vase has been carved or scraped away in parts to create the design. Objects produced with this technique were made in quantity in the 15th and 16th centuries. Beginning in the 17th century, tea bowls were made to Japanese order with this decorative style known as Mishima.
