The surface of this tea bowl, resembling the tortoise shell of the hawksbill sea turtle, was coated with two different glazes. First, a black glaze was applied before it was coated with a straw-white ash glaze, resulting in this intricate irregular pattern of blending colors. Hence the wares of this type came to be called after the animal’s carapace (taihi).
