This object is a large jar from Tokoname kiln at Chita Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture. The market for Tokoname wares had expanded almost all over the country during the Heian and Kamakura Periods. The body of this jar was formed by attaching parts made of clay rope. The parts were then struck as to create a firm bond between each rope. The shape has a dynamic flavor. Deep brownish-green natural glazing covers the mouth, shoulder, and body parts. It is one of the typical large jars of the Kamakura Period.
