Okuda Eisen (1753-1811) was the first Kyôyaki potter to succeed in producing porcelain. It was even said that his ancestors were Chinese who had immigrated to Japan, and he copied many types of Chinese ceramics, including underglaze blue with overglaze enamels (J., gosu aka-e) and cobalt blue on white porcelain (J., sometsuke) styles. Many of his disciples went on to become famous Kyôyaki potters of the end of the Edo period (1615-1868).
