The iron plates are jointed together to form this Akoda-nari style helmet. It is coated with black lacquer, and all 48 joint parts of the iron plates are rimmed with gold. The Mabisashi visor is decorated with chrsythanemums carved in a Sukida-shibori-style over a gilt bronze Nanako-ji pattern. Also, ornamental rivets with decorations of lions and peonies in heigh relief (alto-relievo) are attached. Lions were the traditional subjects used by the Goto family for their metal decorations. That family was the leading metal carvers at that time.
A unique aspect of this helmet is its use of lions for the fittings, which is not common. The Shiroko neck protector is made of gold-leafed small scales, laced with navy-blue threads. It indicates just how popular gorgeous designs had become in the early modern ages.
