The production of traditional ceremonial armor came into vogue among the feudal lords in the Edo period. This large yoroi armor with braided white and indigo silk cords is one such classical example, which strictly adheres to the medieval style of armor in every detail from its large shoulder pads, protective skirt (kusazuri), use of sandalwood and solar plex board, to the decorative dyed-leather stripes. This piece here was produced some time in the Kyoho era (1716-73), and was passed down in the Hotta clan, which governed the feudal domain of Sakura in Shimousa (now Chiba Prefecture).
