This is a classical dagger attributed to the craftsmanship of Masamune (fl. early to mid-14th century), a master swordsmith of Sagami in the Kamakura period. Deep grains, created in the quenching pattern, form its overall effect along with its straight-grained texture and large blade pattern, which are characteristic of the Soshu School, beginning with Masamune. However, unlike most daggers bearing his signature, in which the curvature decreases near the point (uchizori), this tanto is an unusual example with a relatively curved tip (sakizori).
