In 668, the kingdom of Unified Silla consolidated the three early kingdoms of the Korean Peninsula, Koguryo, Paekche, and Silla. Although Buddhism was introduced to Silla, somewhat later than the other two kingdoms, in the sixth century, after its transmission, it spread rapidly, and after the unification of the Three Kingdoms, Buddhism flourished further. This statue was cast in the eighth century, some time after the unification. The plain, undetailed back of the Buddha and the form of the pedestal are representative features of such statuettes from this period.
