This buddha’s proportionally large head, wide eyes, and small lips make it feel almost childlike, giving it an air of youthful innocence. The inscription on its base begins with a reign year that corresponds to 689. Both its beauty and inscribed date make this an important sculpture of the early Tang dynasty.
