Liu Yong (also known by the sobriquet, Chongru, and the style name, Shian; 1719-1804) came from the region of Zhucheng (Shandong Province). In 1751 (Qianlong 17), he passed the official bureaucratic exam. Starting with the style of the Ming (1368-1644) calligrapher Dong Qichang (1555-1637), Liu Yong was later greatly influenced by the Northern Song (960-1127) literatus, Su Shih (1036-1101), and achieved a fleshy, solid style of calligraphy.
