This hanging scroll displays the strong and solemn calligraphic style of Ni Yuanlu (1593-1644). His calligraphy, particularly in the semi-cursive and cursive scripts, was described in Tongyinlunshu (E., Discourses on the Shade of the Paulownia Tree) as inspiring, and indeed, the exquisiteness of his skill in the semi-cursive script is marvelously demonstrated in this work.
