This is a segment from the second volume of Wakan ryôei shû (E., Collection of Japanese and Chinese Verses) handwritten by Fujiwara Sadanobu (1088-158), the fourth-generation descendant of Fujiwara Yukinari (972-1027). Sadanobu was a renowned calligraphist of the late Heian period (794-1185) and is known for having copied the entire corpus of the scriptures (J., Issaikyô, Skt., Tripitaka) all by himself. The verses are written on chalked Chinese paper (J., gubiki karakami) with a double-vine design.
