This painting by Ukita Ikkei (1795-1859) stylistically depicts Uraga Bay (in Kanagawa Prefecture) and Commodore Matthew Perry’s second visit to Japan in 1854.
Ikkei was a fukko yamato-e (yamato-e revivalist) painter, who witnessed the momentous arrival of Perry. As a loyalist against the Tokugawa government, he was arrested during the Ansei Purge (1858-59) and passed away shortly thereafter.
