Gesshô (1846-1918), known as Sôryû, started out as a literati painter. Later, he became a western-style painter when he saw photographs for the first time at the end of the Edo period (1616-1867). This oil painting, depicting the famous warrior-priest Benkei (d. 1189), was shown at the first exhibition of the Kansai Art Forum in 1901 and recently underwent restoration, giving it a new look.
