Tamura Gesshô (also known as Sôryû; 1846-1918) was born near what is today the Sonobe area of Kyoto Prefecture. Famous for his aptitude in changing from literati to Western-style painting, he also created Japanese paintings as well. This work is unusual in that Gesshô incorporated different styles: the face of the dragon king was rendered using light and shadows found in Western techniques, while the overall finish resembles Japanese-style Buddhist paintings. The background was also painted by Gesshô himself.
