He Shaoji (1799-1873), whose sobriquet was Zizhen, used the pseudonyms Dongzhou, and later, Yuansuo. Having studied under Ruan Yuan (1764-1849), he was well versed in epigraphy and accomplished in poem engraving. He first mastered the Yan Zhenqing (709-784?) style of calligraphy and later the Beibei school, eventually moving on to the zhuan and li ("seal and clerical") style.
