He Shaoji (1799-1873) was born in Daozhou, Hunan Province. He is also known by his sobriquet Zizhen and his style name Dongzhou. As a child, he learned to love the study of calligraphy and epigraphs through classical and historical Chinese sources. This hanging scroll contains two poems of eight stanzas containing seven characters each by Ma Zhen (n.d.) of the Yuan dynasty (1277-1368). It was written in 1855 (Xianfeng 5), when He Shaoji was fifty-seven years old.
