The civic office of eastern and western Zhejiang Province in China published this edition of the Commentary on the Flower Garland Sutra (Ch., Huayan jingshu; J., Kegonkyô sho), in accordion-book format, during the Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279). At the beginning of this booklet is the vermilion stamp of Kôzan-ji in Kyoto, indicating that it once belonged to this temple. At the end of this printed scripture is an inscription, dated the tenth month of 1248 (Hôji 2), by Kikai (1178-1250), who was known as a leading disciple of the Kegon master Myôe (1173-1232), and as a monk devoted to the expansion of Kôzan-ji. Kikai’s words reveal the nature of his lectures in his later years.
