This sutra was dedicated by Empress Shōtōku (718–770) in honor of the previous Emperor Shōmu (701–756). It represents one example from several that the empress had copied from entire Buddhist Canon (Tripitaka). The large, vigorous brushstrokes are typical of late Nara period (710–794) sutra copies.
