Following the death of her father and mother, Empress Kōmyō (701–760), the wife of Emperor Shōmu (701–756), commissioned in their honor a newly scribed edition of the entire Buddhist Canon (known as Tripitaka). At the end of each scroll, a dedication from the empress is found, dated “first day of the fifth [lunar] month of 740.”
