This is a rubbing of calligraphy on a monument granted by Emperor Taizong (598-649, r. 626-649) of Tang China (618-907) and built by the priest Huairen (J., Kainin) on the premises of Hongfu-si Temple in Changan (present-day Xian) in the province of Shanxi, China. The monument was built in the twelfth month of 672 (Xianheng 3) and bears the text of the Buddhist scriptures, Datang shanzeng shengjiaoxu (J., Daitô sanzô shôgyôjo), translated by Xuanzang, Xusanzang shengji by Emperor Gaozong (628-683, r. 649-683), and Poruo xingjing (J., Hannya shinkyô, E., Heart Sutra). The calligraphy is by Wang Xizhi (J., Ô Gishi, 307-365) but only completed by Huairen through gathering Xizhi's handwritten calligraphy in cursive style and applying them to the scriptures. It is counted a masterpiece of calligraphy. The original monument is housed at Xian Beilin History Museum.
