These scrolls were a gift to Ueno Riichi (Yūchiku, 1848–1919) from Qing official and calligrapher Baoxi. He may have brushed them during a spring 1913 “Orchid Pavilion Gathering” of literati in Kyoto. The characters imitate Qing scholar Yao Nai’s (1731 –1815) rendition of Wang Xizhi’s Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Gathering on blue silk painted with auspicious imagery.
