The Qing emperor Shengzu (1654-1722, r. 1661-1722) was the third son of the emperor Shunzhi (1638-61, r. 1643-61) and the fourth ruler of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). He ruled under the reign name Kangxi. During his reign, he increased the achievements of the literary and military arts in China, and established the foundations of the Qing dynasty. The calligraphy on this hanging scroll is a copy of a poem celebrating plum blossoms, written in four stanzas of seven characters each. The poem was originally composed by the prominent calligrapher and poet Huang Tiangjian (also known as Shangu, 1045-1105), of the Northern Song dynasty (960-1127).
