Ruan Yuan pioneered the study of stone steles (beixue) in the latter Qing, putting forth the theory of “northern steles, southern model books.” Ruan’s likely wrote these thirteen letters to his younger brothers after 1838, when a foot problem caused him to retire to Yangzhou. Despite his scholarship, Ruan’s actual calligraphy follows a gentler model-book (tiexue) style.
