Itô Rangû (1694-1778), whose given name was Chôkei and sobriquet, Saizô, was a Confucian scholar of the mid-Edo period (1615-1868). He was the fifth son of Itô Jinsai (1627-1705), the founder of the Kogigaku school of Confucianism. In 1731 (Kyôho 16), the Tokugawa family offered Rangû the position of Confucian scholar in the province of Kii (present-day Wakayama Prefecture). He died in the third month of 1778 (An'ei 7) in Wakayama at the age of 85. Although he had been partial to painting orchids in ink, it is said that he gave it up after collecting such paintings became popular.
