This scroll comes from the eight-volume Pinimu jing (J., Binimokyô), which is thought to been originally translated from Sanskrit to Chinese during the Qin dynasty (350-431). This scripture reads more like the Precepts in Four Divisions (Skt., Dharmaguptavinaya; Ch., Shifen lu; J., Shibunritsu) than a sutra and is classified as a text on the precepts. The outer title on the cover of this manuscript was written by the Japanese Kegon (Ch., Huayen) priest Kôben (Myôe; 1173-1232), and the colophon, dated Kenkyû 9 (1198) was written by the priest Jôben. A red seal of Mount Kôya, the mountain sacred to esoteric Buddhism is stamped at the beginning of this text.
