Dutch traders commissioned a Kyoto lacquer shop to make this and countless other plaques. A piece exemplifying collaborations between Dutch and Japanese merchants, the image of an ancient Roman maritime battle pageant (naumachia) on this plaque is a direct copy of a copper print from a 1771 edition of world history.
