This red lacquerware set of sake cups was used for serving rice wine during the kaiseki meals of tea gatherings. The festive design of a crane encircled by peonies in golden makie against a red background refers to kinrande porcelain: a style of porcelain with overglaze gold. The outer box bears a seal by the Kyoto artist Nagano Ōteki.
