This scroll comes from a set of 600 scrolls copied singlehandedly in 1275 by a monk named Hōkaku. One year earlier, in 1274, the Mongols had attempted to invade Japan. Such circumstances suggest the sincerity and fervency with which Hōkaku made these prayers for peace in this world and rebirth into the Pure Land after death.
