Sparsely scattered with gold and decorated with flowers and birds in silver paint, this manuscript of the Lotus Sutra was skillfully copied in a Japanese calligraphic style. The margins and columns have also been ornately lined in gold, making this relatively small-sized sutra elegant in appearance. On the reverse side of the paper is a phoenix in silver paint. Traces of folded lines are evident, revealing that, though originally made as a handscroll, this manuscript was at some point remade into a folded book. This was later restored to its original format.
