This fragment of the Lotus Sutra is copied onto paper that was sprayed with clove sap, which not only gave it a rich fragrance, but also protected it from insects. This is a decorated sutra, copied in an elegant calligraphic style with the margins and columns lined in gold paint and underdrawings of birds, butterflies, and flowering plants in gold and silver paints. Because of its ornate, secular design, this edition comes to be known as the 'Butterflies and Birds Edition' (Chocho-gire) or 'Sutra with Underdrawings of Birds' (Tori Shitae-gire). Although attributed to the hand of Empress Komyo (701-760), this fragment seems to have been copied in the mid-eleventh century.
