This mask was used for a Descent of Amida (raigo-e) temple ritual--a procession depicting the Amida Buddha and 25 bodhisattvas coming to welcome the dead to the Pure Land paradise. It is made of lightweight wood, maybe paulownia, covered with hemp and lacquer.
