Incense Burner in the Shape of a Sanbasō Dancer

Museum No.
GK911

Sanbasō is a ritual dance performed in the Noh theater to pray for bountiful harvests. This figurine is actually an incense burner-—smoke comes out of the mouth and nose. Its garments are covered with auspicious patterns including pine, bamboo, and crane, as well as repeating patterns of hexagons and waves.
