In 691 (Tienshou 2), Yijing, a monk of the Tang dynasty (618-907), recorded his observations, including the daily lives of monks and nuns in India and the various lands of the South Seas. Though his writing is extremely abstruse, this edition includes annotations that serve as reading aids. The beginning and end of this manuscript have been lost.
Yijing's travelogue was well known to later generations well into the Edo period (1615-1868), when the Shingon priest Jiun Onkô (1718-1804) wrote a commentary explaining the meaning of this work.
