These accessories (combs, kōgai hair ornaments, and kanzashi hair pins) made from the shell of sea turtles were used in traditional Japanese women’s coiffures. Tortoiseshell is normally a mottled brown; the blond variety was considered the most desirable in Japan. During the Edo period, large blond tortoiseshell kanzashi hair pins would be worn by women of the warrior class on formal occasions.
