This tray for holding an incense container and incense burner comes from a powerful daimyo (feudal lord) family. The mulberry wood is coated with clear lacquer to bring out the grain. The front is decorated with high quality pictorial makie (made by sprinkling gold powder into wet lacquer). Even the backside has an overall mottled pearskin (nashiji) pattern.
