This elegant box for storing a kotsuzumi (hourglass hand drum) has maple trees in the style of Rinpa artists, who often intentionally pooled wet ink and colors. Here, this effect is created using burnished gold and silver makie. The design of this box likely reflects the revived popularity of Rinpa aesthetics during the Taishō period (1912–1926).
