In Tenpyô Hôji 5 (761), the priest Kôkaku (n.d.) collected donations from many followers to copy a set of the entire Buddhist canon (J., issaikyô). This sutra comes from this beautifully copied set. Inscribed in its colophon is the note, "To present to the Emperor and Empress," indicating that the sutras were copied for Emperor Junnin (733-765, r. 758-764) and his empress.
The yellow paper of this manuscript is made of fibers that were insufficiently beaten, resulting in a rather rough-looking, uneven paper. Although not of the highest quality and missing its frontispiece, this sutra is of interest as a rare and early example of a chishiki kyô, a sutra donated by believers of various backgrounds.
