A tsuba is a hand guard that fits between the grip and blade of a sword. This example is made from thick iron with openwork and intricate relief designs of figures and scenery with colorful metal inlays. The Sōheishi school of metalworkers was based in Hikone, in today’s Shiga prefecture. Munenori was their most famous maker of tsuba.
