This set of dishes is a rare surviving collaboration by the eponymous Rinpa artist Ogata Kōrin (1658–1716) and his younger brother Ogata Kenzan (1663–1743). Kōrin painted the eccentric Tang dynasty monk poets Hanshan (J: Kanzan, left) and Shide (J: Jittoku, right) in iron brown, while Kenzan made the ceramic plates and brushed the poetic inscriptions.
