Airy calligraphy dances easily over patterned paper. Note the over 130 cm width of each sheet of paper. (Look for joints between sheets.) These poems were composed for a 1588 poetry gathering hosted by imperial regent Hideyoshi (1536–1598) at his Kyoto palace Jurakutei. Extraordinarily, Emperor Go-Yōzei (1571–1617) attended. The courtier, poet, and calligrapher Karasumaru Mitsuhiro later copied these verses.
