On the lid of this writing box is an open fan showing a garden replete with chrysanthemums and a half-closed fan with vases of cherry and kerria branches. These motifs recall the contest between the beauty of spring and the beauty of autumn, which takes place in the “Butterflies” (Kochō) chapter of the classical novel The Tale of Genji.
