An inscription on its storage box tells us that this tray was used for serving rice wine. The design was clearly inspired by the famous Pontoon Bridge Inkstone Case (National Treasure, Tokyo National Museum) by Hon’ami Kōetsu (1558–1637), but unlike many later examples by famous lacquer artists, it is not an exact replica.
