This box may have been used to hold pieces of incense wood, though we cannot be sure. It displays a scene from “The Typhoon,” in The Tale of Genji. After a damaging storm, Genji’s son Yūgiri visits the Empress and glimpses her colorfully robed servant girls setting out insect cages in the damp grass, amidst the wafting scent of incense.
