This lidded toiletries case, known as a tebako, is covered with an auspicious design of tiny flying plovers, whose song, “chiyo, chiyo,” means “in perpetuity.” Most of the classical and medieval tebako that survive today were outfitted with personal grooming implements and donated by their wealthy owners to shrines as sacred offerings.
