This rather small parinirvana painting depicts the historical Buddha Shakyamuni’s physical death in a groove of sala trees under a full moon, on the 15th day of the 2nd month. The work exemplifies the aesthetics of a transitional period between the Heian (794–1185) and the Kamakura (1185–1333) period.
