For formal occasions, woman wore lavish unbelted uchikake outer robes. This kind of sash held their under-kimonos (aigi) in place. This example is embroidered with pine, bamboo, plum, and chrysanthemums in a basket placed on a flower cart--all good luck symbols. Few such sashes survive due to the wear and tear they undergo.
